Lawn Mower Dimensions: How Big Is a Lawn Mower?

Last updated October 31, 2026

A push mower is about 20 to 24 inches wide, 56 to 60 inches long with the handle up and 35 to 45 inches tall. A lawn tractor runs about 60 to 75 inches long, 40 to 47 inches tall and roughly 11 to 13 inches wider than its deck, so a 42 inch deck measures about 55 inches across with the chute down.

That overall width, not the deck size, decides whether a mower fits through your gate. Measure the narrowest real point of the route with the chute down, and leave 6 inches of spare width for a rider, 2 to 3 inches for a walk-behind.

The five measurements behind lawn mower dimensions

Mixing up cutting width with overall width is the most common buying mistake, and it is the one that turns a mower that fits the lawn into a mower that will not fit the gate.

  • Cutting width, or deck size. The blade path. It sets how many passes a lawn takes and therefore how long you mow. It is the number mowers are sold by and the number in the model name.
  • Overall width. The widest point of the machine as it sits. On nearly every side-discharge mower this is the discharge chute, not the deck. This is the number that decides gate and door fit.
  • Overall length. Front edge to rear, including a rear bagger or hitch if fitted. It decides storage depth and trailer fit.
  • Height. To the top of the handle on a walk-behind, to the top of the seat back or roll bar on a rider. It decides shelf, shed and garage-door clearance.
  • Weight. It decides whether one person can lift the mower into a truck bed, push it up a slope or roll it up a ramp.

Cutting height is a sixth number and a different thing entirely: it is the grass length setting, typically 1 to 4 inches, not the size of the machine.

Typical dimensions by mower type

Each type has its own footprint, and the spread from a reel mower to a zero-turn is enormous.

Manual reel mower

Cutting width runs 14 to 20 inches, overall width is close to the cutting width because there is no side chute, and weight is 15 to 35 lb. It is the most compact type and the easiest to hang on a wall.

Corded electric push mower

Cutting width is 18 to 21 inches, overall width about 1 to 2 inches more than the deck, and weight 30 to 40 lb.

Battery push and self-propelled mower

Cutting width is 18 to 22 inches, overall width 1 to 2 inches more than the deck, and weight 30 to 60 lb. A compact 14 inch cordless model measures roughly 50 inches long, 16 inches wide and 40 inches tall and weighs about 33 lb.

Gas push and self-propelled mower

Cutting width is 20 to 22 inches, overall width about 22 to 23 inches, length about 56 inches with the handle up and 30 to 40 inches folded, height 40 to 43 inches, weight 55 to 90 lb. A 21 inch gas push mower is a good anchor: about 56 inches long, 22 inches wide and 40 inches tall, around 62 lb.

Rear-engine riding mower

Cutting width is 30 to 34 inches, overall width roughly 10 to 12 inches more than the deck with the chute down, and weight 300 to 400 lb.

Lawn tractor and riding mower

Cutting width runs 36 to 54 inches, with 42 inches the most common residential size. Overall length is 60 to 75 inches, height 40 to 47 inches, weight 400 to 550 lb. A 42 inch tractor measures about 69.7 inches long, 55.2 inches wide with the chute down, 46.5 inches wide with the deflector raised and 39.2 inches wide with the deck removed, on a 48.9 inch wheelbase, at about 444 lb.

Zero-turn mower

Cutting width runs 42 to 72 inches, with 42 to 60 inches typical for residential use and 54 to 72 inches for larger commercial-style machines. Overall length is about 80 inches, height 45 to 47 inches, weight 650 to 1,400 lb. A 54 inch zero-turn measures about 80 inches long, 65.5 inches wide with the chute down and 55 inches with the deflector up, at 653 to 689 lb. A 60 inch model measures about 80 inches long, 71.5 inches wide with the chute down and 61 inches with the deflector up, at around 668 to 702 lb.

Robotic mower

The body is about 24 inches long, 18 inches wide and 9 to 11 inches tall, with a cutting width around 8.7 inches and a weight of about 20 to 21 lb. Add the docking station footprint, and plan on roughly 24 inches of clear passage for the mower to travel between lawn zones.

Wide-deck walk-behind

A 30 inch class walk-behind sits between push mowers and riders, and buyers underestimate it: the deck plus chute can be wider than a 36 inch gate.

Deck size vs machine width, the gap that decides fit

On a walk-behind the machine is only 1 to 2 inches wider than the deck, because the chute is small and the wheels sit inside the deck line. On riders, tractors and zero-turns the machine is about 11 to 13 inches wider than the deck with the chute down: a 42 inch deck measures 55.2 inches across, a 54 inch deck 65.5 inches, a 60 inch deck 71.5 inches.

The gap comes from the discharge chute projecting sideways from the deck and from the rear wheels and fenders sitting outside the deck line.

Manufacturers also publish a "deflector raised" width, and it is meant for storage and transport, not for mowing. A 42 inch tractor drops from 55.2 inches to 46.5 inches with the deflector raised, a 54 inch zero-turn from 65.5 to 55 inches, a 60 inch from 71.5 to 61 inches. That figure is for parking the machine. The chute-down width is the one to measure for mowing access.

If the deck comes off for storage or transport, the deck-off width is the number that matters: 39.2 inches on the 42 inch tractor.

Will it fit? Gates, doors, sheds and ramps

Measure the route, not the gate. The narrowest point is often a gate hinge, a post, a downspout, a raised threshold, or the turn immediately inside or outside the gate. Walk the route with a tape and note every pinch point, then measure the mower in the configuration you will mow in, chute down.

Leave 6 inches of total spare width for a rider through a gate or door, and 2 to 3 inches for a walk-behind. Allow more if there is a turn or a slope at the threshold, because the machine swings wide as it turns.

Standard US openings to measure against are gates of 36, 48 and 60 inches, garage doors of 8 ft (96 in) or 9 ft, and a single shed door often 36 or 48 inches.

OpeningWhat gets through
36 in gateWalk-behinds comfortably; the smallest rear-engine riders (30 to 34 in deck) only with the chute up and no margin; a 30 in wide-deck walk-behind is tight
48 in gateMost 42 in tractors with the chute up, with little margin; not with the chute down
60 in gate42 in tractors with the chute down; 48 to 54 in mowers with the chute up
72 in and wider, or a double gateMost residential zero-turns

Storage space

A push mower needs roughly 3 ft wide by 5 to 6 ft deep with the handle extended, less folded. A rider needs a full garage bay, and a shed door of 72 to 84 inches is the comfortable size for a 42 inch tractor. A 55.2 inch wide tractor needs about 61 inches of clear opening, so a 60 inch double door leaves only about 4¾ inches of total spare with the chute down.

Height clearance

Check the top of the handle on a walk-behind and the seat back or roll bar on a rider against the shed or garage door opening, and against any shelf above the parking spot.

Bagger

A rear bagger adds length and height, not just width. Measure depth and height with it fitted if you plan to use one.

Trailer, ramp and truck bed

A 55 inch wide, 444 lb tractor does not fit a 48 inch wide trailer. Check trailer deck width, ramp width and ramp angle, and tailgate height for a walk-behind. Weight matters as much as width here.

Between fence and garden bed

The same clearance rule applies to mowing corridors, not just gates. A rider needs its chute-down width plus spare to pass a bed edge without scalping.

What deck size for your lawn?

Measure grass area, not lot size: subtract the house, driveway, beds and patio.

Grass areaDeck width
Under about 2,000 sq ft16 to 21 in (reel, corded or battery push)
2,000 to 10,000 sq ft (up to about ¼ acre)20 to 22 in push or self-propelled
About ¼ to ½ acre21 to 22 in self-propelled, or step up to a wider deck
About ½ to 1 acre30 to 42 in (rear-engine rider or small tractor)
1 to 2 acres42 in tractor
2 to 4 acres42 to 54 in
4+ acres54 to 60 in or more, or a zero-turn

Push and self-propelled mowers suit lawns up to about half an acre, and a 1/3 to 1/2 acre lawn calls for a deck of 18 to 21 inches. Past about half an acre you step up to a wider deck or a different machine.

Mowing-time math

Passes equal grass area divided by the deck width times an effective-swath factor below 1, because of overlap and turns. Minutes equal passes times pass length divided by ground speed. Take a 20,000 sq ft lawn mowed at 3 mph with a 42 inch deck and a swath factor of 0.85: the effective swath is about 35.7 inches, or 2.98 ft, so the lawn needs about 6,700 linear feet of passes, which at 264 ft per minute is roughly 25 minutes of pure mowing. A 21 inch walk-behind at the same speed needs about 50 minutes. On a 2,000 sq ft lawn the same two machines differ by about 2.5 minutes, which is why deck width barely matters on a small yard.

Don't buy the widest deck that fits the lawn. Buy the widest deck that fits the access, the storage and the turning space. A 54 inch deck that cannot get through the gate is worse than a 42 inch deck that can. Wider decks cut faster but need more room to turn, more storage and a wider route.

Cutting height and machine height, two different numbers

Cutting height is the grass length setting, typically 1 to 4 inches across residential mowers. Some zero-turns reach 5 inches, and robotic mowers run lower, around 0.8 to 2 inches or 1 to 4 inches depending on the model.

Machine height is the physical height of the mower: 35 to 45 inches to the top of the handle on a walk-behind, 40 to 47 inches on a rider. The two are unrelated, and buyers confuse them when checking shed or shelf clearance.

For most US lawns, set blade height to 3 to 3½ inches, with 2½ inches as a practical floor and about 4 inches as the ceiling most residential mowers reach.

Weight as a dimension

Weight ranges from 15 to 35 lb for a reel mower, 30 to 40 lb corded, 30 to 60 lb battery push, 55 to 90 lb gas push, 300 to 400 lb rear-engine rider, 400 to 550 lb lawn tractor and 650 to 1,400 lb zero-turn. A typical residential riding mower weighs about 500 to 600 lb.

Weight decides whether you can lift the mower into a truck bed, push it up a slope, roll it up a ramp, and whether the shed floor or a wooden ramp will take it. A self-propelled walk-behind's drive pulls it forward, so its weight matters less on slopes than a push mower's does.

Five measurements make up a mower's size, and the one that decides whether it fits is overall width with the chute down, not deck size. The gap between the two is 1 to 2 inches on a walk-behind and about 11 to 13 inches on a rider, tractor or zero-turn.

Measure the narrowest real point of the route, leave 6 inches of spare width for a rider and 2 to 3 inches for a walk-behind, and buy the widest deck that fits the access, the storage and the turning space rather than the widest deck that fits the lawn. Settle the type of mower first, from your lawn size, then choose the size.

Frequently asked questions

Most fit problems come down to one number: the width of the machine with the discharge chute down, measured at the tightest point of the route.

How wide is a standard lawn mower?

About 20 to 24 inches for a push mower. On a rider, add roughly a foot to the deck size to get the width you must clear, so a 42 inch deck needs about 55 inches of opening.

How big is a riding lawn mower?

Plan on a footprint close to a small car: a lawn tractor takes up roughly 5 to 6 ft of length and 3 to 5 ft of width, and a zero-turn needs more of both, so a full garage bay or a large shed is the realistic home for either.

Will a 21-inch mower fit through a 36-inch gate?

Yes, comfortably. A 21 inch push mower is about 22 to 23 inches wide overall, which leaves over a foot of spare through a 36 inch opening.

Will a 42-inch mower fit through a 48-inch gate?

Only with the chute up and little margin. With the chute down the machine is about 55 inches wide and will not fit.

What's the difference between cutting width and overall width?

Cutting width is the blade path. Overall width is the widest point of the machine, usually the discharge chute. On riders the gap is about 11 to 13 inches.

How much clearance should I leave on each side when a riding mower passes a garden bed?

Treat a mowing corridor the same way you treat an opening: the machine has to clear the bed edge by its chute-down width plus spare, or the deck will scalp the turf along the border. A rider that measures 55.2 inches across with the chute down, such as a 42 inch tractor, therefore wants a corridor wider than that figure before you count the bed. Leave the same 6 inches of total spare width you would allow at an opening, and more where the ground slopes or the path bends.

How much storage space does a push mower need?

Plan a footprint of roughly 3 by 6 ft with the handle up, and check the folded length against the depth of the shelf or corner you plan to park it in, since folding saves length but not width.

What size shed for a riding mower?

A full garage bay. Budget for a full garage bay rather than a corner: the door opening is only half the question, since you also need depth for the deck and room to walk around the machine.

How long is a lawn mower with the handle folded?

About 30 to 40 inches for a push mower, against 56 to 60 inches with the handle up.

How tall is a lawn mower?

Taller than most people expect, so check it against the door header and any shelf above the parking spot before you commit to a storage corner.

How much does a lawn mower weigh?

Enough that a rider is a two-person lift at best and often needs a ramp, while a reel or battery push mower can be carried by one person.

Do robotic mowers need much space?

Less than you might think for the machine itself, but the docking station needs a level spot with a power supply, and the mower has to be able to reach every zone on its own, so leave a clear run of about two feet wherever it travels between lawn areas.

Are wider mower decks better?

Not automatically. A wide deck saves time only where the lawn is open enough to use its full swath; on a cluttered yard with beds, trees and tight corners, a smaller deck often finishes just as fast because it turns and maneuvers more easily.

Is a gas mower bigger than a battery mower?

At the same deck size, a gas push mower is typically longer and heavier. Overall width is similar.

What size trailer do I need for a riding mower?

One whose deck is wider than the machine measured with the chute down, with a little room to spare for straps and wheel placement, and whose weight rating covers the mower plus any bagger or attachment. Check the ramp width and angle too, since loading is where most mishaps happen.

What is the standard cutting height for a lawn mower?

Typically 1 to 4 inches. For most US lawns, set 3 to 3½ inches.
